You really are what you eat and that is also reflected in the condition of your hair, skin and nails?
Whilst I am extremely vigilant when it comes to products I put on my skin from my skincare choices to makeup, there is little point if we don’t support those good choices with a positive way of eating and good food consumption . I once read an article by Dr Campbell-McBride who stated that the last item you should budget on is food because what we consume is the basis of good health.
ADDing these superfoods to your diet will not only help to support your quest for shiny hair, healthy skin and strong nails but will help you feel good providing you support their implementation with a wholesome balanced diet.
Forget all the complicated eating plans and diets- they don’t work long term. Start by eating only foods that are as close to nature as possible. Forget anything found in any form of packaging and you will start to look and feel better over time. Why not start with my list of favourite superfoods found easily in your supermarket or market. These are readily available and very easy to prepare and add to what you may already be eating.
Once I stopped putting chemicals on my hair to dye it, it encouraged me look at other areas of my lifestyle too, including the food I was eating. After all, everything is connected- anything that is good for the hair is also going to be good for the body as a whole.
The following are the Superfoods that are not only super for your hair but will keep you healthy from the inside out……so you simply glow!
I love eggs and eat them most days. There is now research to support the fact that cholesterol from food has no bearing on cholesterol in the body. Taken from an article from Cleveland Clinic titled ‘Why we should no longer worry about Cholesterol in Food’, Dr Nissen MD states ” The body creates cholesterol in amounts much larger than you can eat….About 85% of cholesterol in the circulation is manufactured by the body in the liver. It isn’t coming directly from cholesterol that you eat”.
Eggs are abundant in a water Soluble B Vitamin called biotin, which is excellent for your hair. Eggs are also a great source of protein. I have eggs almost every day, mostly for breakfast. My favourite breakfast is scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and avocado with or without toast. My toast of choice would be organic rye bread toasted.
Spinach is high in omega 3, magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron and is wonderful for promoting beautiful hair, skin and nails. Spinach is so versatile. It can be added to salads, cooked as part of a curry or on the side with some meat or fish and it is super easy to prepare. Make spinach a constant in your diet. It’s also nice with eggs at breakfast and could be added to my sample above by just steaming (welting) in a saucepan over a low heat. In fact, that will be part of my breakfast in the morning 🙂
Salmon is an excellent source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids- one of the ‘good fats’ that are amazing for your hair. Omega 3 is an anti- inflammatory and helps keep hair moisturised at the scalp. Dandruff and dry skin can be a sign of a deficiency in Omega 3.
Salmon can be bought fresh and then cooked in the oven, on the hobb or grilled. You can buy it canned and put in your sandwich or as part of a salad. It can be bought smoked and will make part of a lovely snack or meal. Just ensure your salmon is not farmed. Farmed salmon is known to be high in toxins and is best avoided altogether. It is usually fairly easy to find wild salmon in your supermarket.
I eat smoked salmon as part of a breakfast/ brunch as above or with cream cheese on a rye or quinoa cracker or similar.
Shellfish is a great source of the good fat- Omega 3, and is an excellent source of protein, which means it is excellent for hair and the body as a whole. Protein is our cell’s building blocks and so benefit our body including our hair. Shellfish have good levels of zinc too and is essential for hair follicle health and is often the supplement prescribed to help with hair loss.
Why are nuts good for your hair?
They are absolutely full of oils. Walnuts also contain biotin- a protein that helps hair to grow long and strong, as well as containing omega 3 fatty acids. Brazil nuts contain wonderful oils that are amazing for you. These nuts also contain selenium, which helps promote healthy skin and scalp.
Nuts are the perfect hair superfood to snack on between meals or add them to currys and salads.
5. Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is an essential superfood for your hair and not only can you have it as a snack or part of your breakfast. You can also make a hair mask, which can be put on your hair to leave it soft and silky.
I have Greek Yogurt as an alternative to my cooked breakfast above or even for lunch or a snack. I add it to mixed berries or seasonal fruit and add some honey and/or granola. Greek yogurt contains hair strengthening vitamins like B5 and Vitamin D.
6. Carrots/Sweet Potato/Winter Swede
It’s the best time of year for many of these veggies, because we may be less likely to eat salads in the colder months and opt more for soups and warm vegetables, stews etc.
Make sure you fill your soups with all these vegetables that are great for your hair and they are yummy too!
7. Good Fats for Hair- Avocado/ Coconut Oil/Olive Oil
Avocado, Coconut and Olive Oil are great as part of your diet and can also be put on to the hair topically. There are many recipes online to create your own hair mask, using ingredients such as these. It’s cheaper than buying a hair mask and you know that it is completely natural too.
Don’t forget to drink water alongside your healthy diet and take supplements to support your quest for full health.
Drink 2- 3 litres a day. It will make a difference to both the condition of your hair, skin and nails. It’s one of those things that are simple but not always easy. Make it a habit and buy a water bottle that you can measure the amount of water you’re drinking daily. I have my 1 litre water bottle, that I take everywhere with me.
Enhancing your natural beauty from the inside out through eating foods that nourish the body instead of robbing it of the vitamins and minerals it needs, is one of the positive additions you can add to your life to live to be the ‘best you’ possible.

I am 40 + years of age and I have natural silver hair, which I am very proud of! I am an advocate of vegan beauty, skincare and wellness products to support my healthy living and authentic lifestyle and my quest to keep things simple. I don’t follow a vegan diet as such- I just don’t think animal substances in health and wellness products are necessary. I am also adamantly against animal cruelty in the name of beauty and pro products that have minimal impact on the environment but work in harmony with us all.
